It is so important to start teaching children early about emotional regulation. Teaching children to identify emotions and how to manage and control them is an important skill. If we can teach them early on how to manage anger, sadness, and worry, this will only help them become more resilient teenagers and adults.
Here is a fun idea for kids and parents alike. As you make this together, start talking about the different emotions: happiness, anger, sadness, worry, boredom, excitement, etc. Talk with your child about how we can learn to calm ourselves down when we are sad, angry, or worried. Teach them how to take deep breaths and calm their body (and emotions) down. They shake up the bottle and then sit while the glitter “calms down”.
You will need the following:
Mason/plastic jar with lid
Superglue or some other adhesive to glue lid
Mix 1 Tbsp. glitter glue for each cup of hot water in jar. Add glitter and food coloring to preference. Glue lid on and shake, shake, shake! Take a deep breath and let it go!!
I do have a couple of recommendations. First, the more glitter glue you add, the more the glitter will stay suspended. It also takes a couple of hours for the glitter glue to truly suspend the glitter well. Second, I would use a smaller jar, preferably plastic. I think this would be fun to put in your purse or diaper bag, but a small, plastic jar would be best. Third, make sure you glue the lid on. Nobody wants wet, glittery blue water spilled on their carpet.
Finally, who says this is only for the kids!! Mommy sometimes needs a time out too! 🙂
