This recipe is an old one. I am not even certain where it came from, but there are many versions out there. I looked and could not find why it is called Mother Goose popcorn, so I have made one up. Mother Goose popcorn is meant to be eaten with children, preferably happy ones that like to be read fairy tales and nursery rhymes. Serve with loads of laughter.
You can’t go wrong!
So, without further ado, here is the recipe:
1 cup milk
2 cups sugar
dash of salt
1 tsp. vanilla
10-12 cups popcorn, popped and kernels removed
I used microwave buttered popcorn this time, about 3 large bags. You can also use air popped or regular microwave popcorn without butter. It will still taste fantastic and may help you get a better color when adding the food coloring.
Mix milk, sugar and salt in medium saucepan. Cook over medium high heat until mixture comes to a boil. Lower the heat and continue to stir until mixture comes to a soft ball stage. This took me about 10-12 minutes. If you use a candy thermometer, this is about 230 degrees. You can also test for the soft ball stage by putting a little bit in cold water. If it disintegrates it is not ready. If you put your hand in and it molds into a very soft ball that flattens, then it is ready.
Remove from heat and add vanilla and food coloring.
Pour mixture over popcorn and stir. Keep stirring until liquid starts to dry. It will lose its gloss and become slightly powdery.
