Sunshine and Sunflowers 22

There have been sunflowers in my life recently.  My little ones brought home a seed from preschool and because they love new things, we put the little paper cup in the sun and watered it.  It began to grow, almost immediately.

I never imagined what would come out of that little seed.  For some reason, one seed didn’t grow.  Same light, same water, different seed.  It struggled.  At one point, we saw a little green, but shortly thereafter it died.

But, this sunflower, well, it grew.  It grew and it grew.  This is one flower on the plant.

My little ones were so excited to see their little seed grow and flower.  It stands taller than our 6 foot privacy fence.

You see, I learned something about sunflowers.  They follow the sun.  Every day, the flower on a sunflower will turn itself towards the sun and will follow as the sun moves across the sky through the day.  It is a beautiful and exciting thing.

We sat outside and taught our little ones this lesson.

But, the miracle didn’t stop there.  Some may think this is silly, but the flower developed and continued to grow, and another flower on the plant turned into this:

Sunflower Heart

Now, if my eyes don’t deceive me, that is a heart.

You see, my heart has been stretching a little the past few weeks.  Sometimes it has felt tugged a little too hard at a pace that I dislike.  It has been hurting, and I have been feeling even a little lost and alone.  But, when I go in my backyard and look at this flower, I am reminded that I need to turn my face to the sun.

Sunflower Sunshine

Or, maybe right now I need to remember to turn my face towards The Son.

And moreover, I say unto you, that there shall be no other name given
nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men,
only in and through the name of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent.
Mosiah 3:17

I hope this flower can bring a little of the Son into your life.

Happy Sunday!

Thanks Brittany. I do love symbolism, and I love that I can teach my children from it as well. I am amazed that this flower is real! I had one person today ask me if it was photoshopped! I really enjoyed your article on grieving. It helped me get to know you just a little better! Happy Sunday to you!

It made me think when we follow the “Son” our hearts will be more open and willing to love. Such a cool flower. I also like the idea that the shadows will be behind us. Thank you!

Thanks, Teresa. I think that is true. I need to work on this because sometimes I think I can do it on my own, but I need the Son, more all the time. Thank you for being who you are in my life! 🙂

Wow, that is really cool! We had huge and tall sunflowers all over our property growing up, and we always considered them weeds because nobody ever took care of them. But they really did bring beauty to our summers, and we loved watching them follow the sun, too! Beautiful message, Elizabeth!

That is definitely a sun and I love when something like that happens. Always makes me wonder is it a miracle of nature, God’s work or a little bit of both.

This is such a sweet post & your photos are beautiful! I love finding beauty in every day things. It’s such an amazing lesson for little ones. This past year we put up a bird house on our fence and it was amazing to watch our little eggs hatch and learn to fly. I hope you have a great week, Elizabeth!

Thank you Caroline! I do love finding sweet things in every day. I bet you had a wonderful time with your bird house! We have several birds that visit our yard, and my little ones help remind me of the importance of noticing those things every day! Thanks for stopping by and sharing!

That is so neat that this flower grew in the shape of a heart and that it can be an inspiration point for you. Thanks for sharing this on Merry Monday Elizabeth 🙂

Thanks, Erlene. It was kind of a little miracle for us! It has now grown heavy and is drooping, but for a good week it was a beautiful heart!
